How Do We Motivate Students?

Students develop different strategies at different paces. It is important for a teacher to have different ways of learning the formulas for something like math. When you learn math, there are multiple ways to solve an addition problem, and you have to show the students all of these ways.

I remember my teacher would write each concept on the board, and we would circle the one that that we understood best. This was helpful in identifying exactly the way that our sensory register was with our teacher.

Some people understood best by using visual aides and others understood best by reading the solution out loud. It also helped us put the concept in our long term memory instead of a short term memory so that we could continue to build on it through out our time in class. Bringing out props, food, or visual aides are just a few of the ways a teacher can best help her students succeed in the classroom.

Also, they can become independent learners. Our goal is for our students to become independent learners, and cognitive learning is a way that teachers can effectively teach and mold this in their students.
